Adults often experience difficulties in participating and engaging in the performance of various activities of daily living (“ADL’s”) e.g. dressing, grooming, bathing or work post a traumatic event.
Occupational therapy aims to remediate and rehabilitate a person post a traumatic event. The traumatic event could be sustaining a stroke or traumatic head injury, involvement in a motor vehicle accident, hand injuries or the effects of an underlying condition such as multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease or arthritis.
The aim of occupational therapy is to:
-
Restore independence within activities of daily living (“ADL’s”) e.g. retrain and compensate so that an activity of daily living can be performed as independently as possible with the use of an assistive device if necessary
-
Restore physical function, improve strength in weak arms to allow the person the engage in ADL’s independently
-
Restore cognitive function, improve memory, attention, concentration and/or problem solving so that the client can become more independent in ADL’s
-
Improve endurance, strength, balance and mobility
-
Maximize independence as much as possible
-
Accelerate recovery from a traumatic event
-
Provide the specific caregiver training, tailored for each individual client
-
Develop compensatory strategies for the impaired use of an upper or lower limb
-
Global retraining to improve physical and cognitive functioning
-
Establish assistive technology needs e.g. wheelchair, walking aid, grab rails, braces and/or splints
-
Motivate for relevant assistive technology
