Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

The Autistic Spectrum Disorder is an umbrella term used to describe an array of sensory and social difficulties. Autism is a condition that is termed under the Autistic Spectrum Disorder and directly affects how children perceive the world around them, often children with autism struggle to engage socially, make friends and understand non-verbal communication.

Acquired Head/Brain injury

Every 30 minutes, a child or young person will acquire a brain injury. This could be the result of an accident, an illness such as meningitis or encephalitis, a poisoning, a stroke or a brain tumour. Acquired brain Injury or trauma can have profound effects on development of function for a child, and can often take months or years to show.

Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

Occupational therapists can provide effective advice and treatment for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a disorder which affects a child's ability to sustain concentration or multi-task.

Asperger's Syndrome

Asperger's Syndrome is a medical condition, in which children struggle to understand body language, facial expressions and other under tones to communication, have difficulty in social relationships and often have a lack of imagination or take things too literally. An occupational therapist would be able to help better manage some of these symptoms through therapy.

Childhood Cancers

Leukaemia is the most common form of childhood cancer, affecting around 30% of all cases of childhood cancer, closely followed by central nervous system tumours (25%). Other childhood cancers include Neuroblastoma, Retinoblastoma, soft tissue sarcomas, lymphomas and bone tumours; all of which are extremely harmful however with the increase in modern medicine, nearly three quarters of children diagnosed with cancer can now be cured.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder that occurs during or shortly after birth, it results in movement difficulties and often has secondary complications regarding cognition and perception. Although currently there is no cure for Cerebral Palsy, an occupational therapist can provide effective treatment and management of the symptoms that are directly affecting activity performance.

Dyspraxia or Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD)

Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) or Dyspraxia is a term used to describe a delay in development of, or difficulty co-ordinating motor skills in children that directly affects the child's ability to perform common everyday activities.

Developmental Delay

Developmental delay is a term used to describe when a child is not developing in accordance with the national average. Developmental Delay can have an adverse effect on their ability to perform meaningful activities, such as writing, drawing, tying shoe laces, dressing and playing. An occupational therapist can use activities and games to promote the skills needed to improve your child's function within these daily activities.

Down's Syndrome

Down's Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes some level of learning disabilities and a range of physical features. Children with Down's Syndrome are likely to have reduced muscle tone and muscle weakness leading to difficulty in completing occupations both at home and at school.

Hydrocephalus (Child)

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the fluid surrounding the brain (cerebrospinal fluid) is not regulated properly, leading to excess amounts of cerebrospinal fluid in the blood vessels between brain cells. Poor fluid regulation puts an abnormal amount of high pressure on the brain tissue causing them to become damaged and subsequently affect a child's ability to function.

Multiple Sclerosis (Child)

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative condition which affects the protective shell surrounding nerves. The damage to the protective shell leads to a slower electrical impulse between the central nervous system and the muscles, resulting in a variety of muscular difficulties, fatigue and memory problems.

Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular Dystrophy is an inherited condition that gradually worsens, causing muscle weakness and other symptoms. There are six different types of Muscular Dystrophy all varying in symptoms and severity, these types are categorised depending upon the age at which the symptoms become prominent.

Rett Syndrome

Rett Syndrome is a genetic disorder that begins in early childhood, causing severe physical and mental disability and is predominantly found in girls. Rett Syndrome is due to a faulty gene needed to promote brain development. An occupational therapist would be able to work with a child with Rett syndrome in both the assessment and identification of needs and offer treatment aimed at developing the function in the home and school.

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a term used to describe children who struggle to correctly perceive the sensory world around them. The sensory difficulties children with SPD experience may find it difficult to tie shoe laces, write, run and many other childhood activities.

Stroke

Stroke is a neurological condition which is caused by an impairment of blood supply resulting in dysfunction and tissue death in the brain. Depending on the area of the brain struck during stroke, many functional limitations may occur. For a child this can have a dramatic effect on development of skills. An occupational therapist can provide effective assessment and treatment using evidenced based techniques and solutions to improve the functional ability of your child both at school and at home.

Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a fault in the development of the spine and spinal cord, often solved through either prenatal surgery or surgery very soon after birth. The health complications depend upon the area of the spine that is affected, but mainly surround both cognitive and mobility dysfunction. Hydrocephalus is closely linked to Spina Bifida and can also be a common occurrence.
